Birthing with the Goddess is a beautifully illustrated book with art by spiritually
inspired artist Sharon McLeod and an accompanying CD by musicians Ganga Karen Ashworth and
Louise Bell.
The book is about thirteen ancient Goddesses from many different cultures across the planet
that women have called on forever to help them, guide them and support them through pregnancy,
birth and mothering. There is a chapter on each Goddess with Her wisdom and relevant teachings
for today's women and mothers.
Included in the book are helpful exercises to do such as 'letting go of fears', 'meditations
to connect with the baby inside' and fun creative projects. Also, useful information about
herbs to use, rituals to do at different phases of the moon and the spiritual perspective of
pregnancy, birth and motherhood.
The CD is a combination of music and mantras to play to invoke the Goddesses.
An excerpt from the chapter on Brigid...
"Brigid reminds us to stand up for our rights, to arm ourselves with knowledge and light. To
tend our hearth fires, to sing and enjoy reading and writing poetry. As a Birth Goddess Brigid
encourages us to use the light to search deep within us for any limiting fears we may have
and
use the transformative powers of fire to forever alter that energy. She helps us gather
information so we can make informed choices for our babies and ourselves. She reminds us of
the unity amongst women through childbearing and that even in what feels like the darkest
time, there is hope, and healing will come.
We call Brigid be with us in our dark times, shine the light so we may see. Sing to us, speak
poetry to us, and burn bright for us, Goddess.
Childbirth is a place where we see women's rights either honoured or abused. It is a woman's
right to give birth without fear and where and with whom she chooses. And, it is a women's
responsibility to make informed choices.
Fears around childbirth prevail. They are cultural, medical and personal and they are
contagious. Fear limits our experience, often creating whatever it is we fear. During our
pregnancies we need to go into our dark, deep interior, where fears may lurk, in order to
bring forth healing and new beginnings. Much will be revealed to you when you contemplate
your fears around childbirth."
